CHRISTOPHE SCHALCHER: THE OPERATIONAL MAN OF THE SITUATION!

“ I have a passion for discovering new luxuous hotels and fine food, so I am totally served with Mauritius...”

HI CHRISTOPHE, WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

Hi, I come from Switzerland but I have Swiss German origins. I grew up more precisely in Geneva.

IS THERE ANYTHING IN PARTICULAR THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH US?

Well, I was a happy child and my brother and I had a normal childhood in Switzerland. We got the chance to travel a lot very young with our par-ents for holidays in Kenya, Thailand,
Mexico, Hong Kong and twice to The United States. The most interesting part of my life perhaps starts at the age of 20. After majoring in Economics for my final years in high school, I moved to Sydney in Australia for 6 months to enhance my English. On my return, I did the compulsory military training for 4 months and this was an enriching experience. It
taught me discipline and helped me develop a strong feeling of responsibility. Especially when after the training, which lasted 10 years (you have
to go back every year for 3 weeks to refresh your skills), when I was given the fire arm to keep at home. If ever Switzerland is invaded, all the military officers will be called and asked to meet at a certain point with their weapon! Most countries do not make
military training compulsory but I believe it’s a good way of making people develop a sense of patriotism.

YOU TALK ABOUT DISCIPLINE AND ENGAGEMENT, DID THIS REFLECT IN YOUR CHOICE OF TERTIARY STUDIES? WHERE DID YOU CHOOSE TO GRADUATE FROM AND WHY?

I did my higher studies at Lausanne in Switzerland. It is one of the most prestigious universities worldwide for hotel management. I’ve always been fascinated by hotels and the organisation behind every operation and my natural course to follow was hotel management. I did my two internships lasting six months each in Royal Meridien in Geneva as bar man and 6
months in the financial department of Le Meridien in Noumea, New Caledonia.

AFTER YOU GRADUATED, WHAT WAS THE NEXT STEP YOU MADE CAREER WISE?

After my studies, I developed a great passion for airplanes and this passion probably pushed me to look for a job at the Gate Gourmet. The company where I started is the second largest
company in the world for in flight catering. I love structure and organisation and I was glad to step in such a job. My first responsibility was as executive flight coordinator and
within 8 months I was promoted to executive flight manager. I was in charge of VIP guests. I eventually moved along the corporate ladder and became sales manager before becoming administrative production assistant.

DURING THIS TIME, DID YOU MEET ANY VIP?

The royal family of Fahd was touring Europe during my service. So I moved
to Berlin to be in charge of the logistics and operations. It was a great experience!

SO HOW DID YOU LAND IN MAURITIUS AFTERWARDS?

I don’t know (laughs)! Well my girl-friend finished her studies in June 2010 and by that time I had left Gate Gourmet. We both didn’t know where to go but we knew we wanted to leave. Since we both hold degrees in hotel management from Lausanne and we both speak French, Mauritius seemed like a good place to start off our new adventure. I landed on the
28th of June and resumed work as Director of Operations at Tropical Times. One of the coowners was based in Switzerland and I got really lucky when I circulated my CV
through the alumni network of Lausanne. Once in operations again I was thrilled especially for a company dealing with catering and based at the airport.

WE NOW KNOW YOU ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT ORGANISATIONS AND OPERATIONS. WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES?

Well, I went sky diving last Saturday! It was a fantastic experience. I’ve also played the piano for 10 years, especially classical, and I could play at the end a Polonaise of Chopin. I quite like classical music actually. Travelling is another passion of mine especially since I like understanding how people live and how cities and minds work in
different countries. I have a passion for discovering new luxuous hotels and fine food, so I am totally served with Mauritius..
