JEFF BUTTERWORTH - THE AUSTRALIAN NAVIGATOR!

HI JEFF, CAN YOU PLEASE DESCRIBE YOURSELF TO US?

I am an Australian married to my wife Katrina with two boys Flynn 8 and Oliver 5. I come from the Gold Coast, where I met my wife and our families live still. I have a bachelor of applied Science, majoring in Naturopathic Medicine.

IS THERE ANYTHING ABOUT YOUR CHILDHOOD MEMORIES WHICH YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH US?

I have had a blessed upbringing. My father was a farmer with a sense of adventure and built with his own hands a 40 foot yacht. He then launched the yacht, sold the farm, packed up his young family and set off on an adventure of a lifetime. At the time I was 4 years old with my sisters 7 and 10 and my mother who still can-not swim to this day.

We lived on the yacht as a family for the next 6 years discovering new places and growing up on the ocean. We finally settled on the Gold Coast which in my parent’s opinion was  the best place in Australia at the  time.

We sailed the entire east coast of Australia and through the Pacific, swimming, fishing and fossicking  deserted beaches for flotsam. I re-member telling the children at school my swimming pool was the ocean and at times mum taking us to school in our dingy. We also did distance schooling when travelling.

To this day I strongly believe these early formative years inspired my sense of travel and exploring  new lands.

WHO NOW SHARES YOUR ADVENTURES WITH YOU?

Katrina and I were married in Bali in the year 2000. Bali has been a favourite destination for us over the years. Katrina fell pregnant with our first son Flynn while we were living in India and we returned home for him to be born in Australia. Oliver our youngest son was also born in Aus-tralia, he however has lived most of his life abroad as we moved to Dubai shortly after his birth. I am sure both our boys will have the same sense of adventure as both Katrina and I have.

ANY LIFE LESSONS YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE?

I try to learn something from every-one that I meet, good or bad. I believe that everyone that comes into your life is there to teach you something.

A life changing moment for me was while I was living in India I learnt the value of life and compassion.

AFTER ALL THIS TRAVELLING, WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO MAURITIUS?

We found our way to Mauritius after living in Dubai for 3 years. We liked the lifestyle of Dubai however wanted a change for our children to better un-derstand a more realistic lifestyle rather than the hype of Dubai. The opportunity for a corporate position in such a small island setting is rare so we accepted the position and have not regretted it since.

SO WHAT DO YOU DO FOR A LIVING HERE?

I am the Chief Spa and Wellness Offi-cer for LUX* Resorts. I joined the com-pany just before the rebrand from Naiade in 2011 to assist in creating a world class leisure offering for their spa and wellness activities. Since then we created a sub brand LUX*Me which is a combination of spa, fitness, yoga, meditation and nutrition. We were voted the best spa brand in the Indian Ocean in the World Luxury Spa awards and are fast developing an in-ternational reputation for quality spa and wellness programs. We also have over 50 branded spa products which have been very positively received.

WHAT IS AN AVERAGE DAY FOR YOU?

My day is made up of balancing cor-porate meetings and operational is-sues. I spend a lot of time traveling around the island so I leave early to beat the traffic. I then will meet withthe LUX*Me managers to discuss op-erations, new projects and strategies to ensure our standards are continu-ally improving. I will then usually spend some time with the team mem-bers and then meet with the resort general managers to discuss opera-tions and new projects. I am always working to improve our quality stan-dards, financial results and guest ex-perience. This involves regularly meeting with our sales and marketing teams, quality officer and finance teams.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT LIVING HERE?

The thing that I enjoy most about  living in Mauritius is the natural beauty of the ocean and mountains. I am passionate about nature and enjoy trail running and mountain bik-ing whilst at the same time getting into the ocean, snorkeling and surfing when I can get the time.
