EXPATRIATES IN MAURITIUS
» 30 Apr 2013
JULIEN FALIU, THE MAN BEHIND EXPAT BLOG!

HI JULIEN, WHERE DO YOU HAIL FROM?

I was born in Paris but grew up in the South of France, close to the border with Spain. As far as my studies are concerned, I graduated in computer engineering and I also got a Business Administration Degree.

CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR LIFE JOURNEY TO US?

Right after my studies, I decided to go abroad to start working and to de-velop my language skills. I worked for 2 years in London before heading to Madrid. These steps are quite impor-tant as it was then when I started to
develop the concept of Expat blog. I indeed realized that there was lit-tle information available on the web about living abroad. Before moving overseas, expats need to find infor-mation about real and daily life in
their intended host country. As blog-ging was fast-developing at that time, I decided to gather all expatriates’ blogs on a unique platform: this is how Expat blog was born. It was (and
is still!) a passion as I was running the website during my spare time

My first stay in Mauritius in 2007 was then determining for the Expat blog project as this is when I decided to start the company.  I was quite at ease in Mauritius and there was a real need for informa-tion related to international mobility. I
therefore realized I needed to invest more time in my project and I chose to make it my full-time job.

A CLASSIC EXAMPLE OF THINK-ING OUTSIDE THE BOX! HAS ANY-ONE OR ANY EVENT INFLUENCED YOU TO BECOME THIS PERSON?

When I was a kid, my first English classes really inspired me. As a mat-ter of fact, I discovered a passion for travelling and other cultures while starting to learn English. I had the op-portunity at school to work on a proj-ect which enabled us to travel to the
States: that was a wonderful experience. The early members of the web-site, which most of them were blog-gers, also impacted me. I exchanged a lot with them, learnt from their life abroad. When you go abroad and you
are confronted by other cultures, you broaden your horizons: this is a tremendous experience which obviously has an impact on your vision of life.

SO THE EXPAT BLOG, HOW DOES IT WORK?

Expat blog is dedicated to life abroad: it is aimed at helping people living or wishing to live overseas. It provides useful info and tips about life abroad inviting expats to share their experi-ence.
The website is based on a partici-pative scheme: users can share their experiences, useful information and interact with the others on a dedi-cated topic – living overseas. Expat-blog.com is the unique place to get
information on life abroad and to meet people.  The objective is to help and gather  people from all over the world, wher-ever they are from and wherever they would like to go, in order to offer all
the information they need to settle abroad.

COULD YOU GIVE OUR WONDERFUL READERS A GLIMPSE OF AN AVERAGE DAY IN YOUR BUSY LIFE:

I wake up early to head off to our of-fices in Port Louis. The whole day is dedicated to work: dealing with clients and partners, checking every-thing is all right on the website, meet-ings… As a lot of our partners are
overseas, especially in Europe, I have to deal with the time difference with Mauritius and I am then used to late meetings via phone or videoconfer-ence. Helping people in their expatri-ation project is indeed a 24/7 job, but
fortunately, it is a real passion…and I must admit that coffee helps a lot too to cope with busy working days!

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT LIVING ON OUR LITTLE ISLAND?

Multiculturalism is a key element of the Mauritian society. As being pas-sionate for other cultures, I obviously appreciate this characteristic as well as the open-mindedness and friendli-ness of Mauritians.
The colorful surroundings are also quite amazing: every morning, when I drive to work, I can appreciate the lovely colours of the blue lagoon. This is a great way of starting the day, isn’t
it?
Mauritius has a fast-growing economy: the country is developing at a quick pace. It’s wonderful to have the opportunity to assist and to be part of that development.

WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF HAPPINESS?

Happiness is quite simple for me. I have the chance to get up every morning and to come to work with passion. I managed to combine my job and my passion and this is really rewarding.
