LIFESTYLE

HI KATHRIN, WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I was born in Germany in 1980 as the eldest of 5 kids. My dad, sister and brother are doctors in Germany and my other siblings are into the watersports business in Mauritius. I have participated in the World Championships of Gymnastics in Japan and I held the record for best pole vaulting height (4:15m) in 1997/1998. In 2009 I completed a diploma in Sports-Science with Economy/Management as main subjects. I am married to a Mauritian Maxell Ernest with whom I have 2 children (a 3-year old boy and a 4- year old girl) and we all live in Baie du Cap.

HOW WAS YOUR CHILDHOOD IN GERMANY?
I had a great childhood with my parents and sisters and brothers, we all got supported very well with professional sports and went to world championships and Olympic Games. All of us have finished a university degree. Besides, my parents travelled a lot with us around the world! One of the greatest experiences was travelling by bicycle through France, from Brest to the Pyrenees. My family means everything to me and I hope everybody will move to Mauritius. We are working on it…

YOU HAVE HAD AN INCREDIBLE EXPERIENCE GROWING UP BUT WHAT REALLY SHAPED YOU?
Definitely my sports - gymnastics and pole vaulting gave me a lot of experience and strength My  family always supports me and my husband and children as well.

AND HOW DID YOU LAND IN MAURITIUS?
From the first moment on in the year 2009 I loved Mauritius. I never really made big plans to travel here, but after I had finished my university I got an opportunity to help out as a kite surf instructor. Since than I am here. The island is the opposite of the European life. You have the ocean in the front and the sugar cane Mountains in the back of your house. You don’t need a lot to live here, but once in a while I leave for holidays to continue discovering the world with my kids and husband.

WHAT DO YOU DO HERE?
We run the VDWS certified Kitesurf Center in the C Beach Club at the Domaine de Bel Ombre. www.kiteglobing.com We own another center at the Veranda Palmar and at the Maritim Crystals hotel where we also run the boathouse.

WHAT ARE THE THINGS YOU ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT?
My husband and children as well.

WHAT ARE THE THINGS YOU ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT?
I love running in the morning, kitesurfing in the waves, barbecue in the evening and discovering the rest of the world!

WHAT IS YOUR DAY LIKE?
I get up at 6 am, drink coffee and hot chocolate with my family. I go for a 5- 8 km jog at 7am along the road or in the sugar canes. At 8:30 I bring the kids to school and by 9 am, I am working at C Beach Club. I do more of the back office work like Marketing, bookings, accounting, etc. But I also try to keep a close contact with our guest and team. When we get very busy I help out and teach in the water (preferably young children). I also teach more wave kitesurfing or organize our special events such as the famous Down winder from Bel Ombre to Le Morne. Max my husband is responsible for the beach operation. So we pretty much share a lot of work. At 2pm I pick up my kids from school, bring them home or directly to the C Beach Club and we spend some time together. For the busy times I have a nanny who helps me. At around 5pm I go home, we have dinner and at 6 – 7pm it is sleep time for the kids. Often I also fell asleep early between 8 and 9pm.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT LIVING HERE?
The nature, the ocean, the coastline, the waves, the sugar cane and the simple lifestyle are my favorites. I can wear my flip flops everyday, but in case we want to get dressed up a bit, it is also possible as you have a lot of possibilities to go out in the evening with friends or to have a good dinner in the hotels with some live music afterwards. Mauritius offers a variety which I love. And of course I love the food, spicy Mauritian curry with fish or chicken. Fresh fish is the best! I love the weather, mostly sun and wind, I love the beach.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE QUOTE?
Live your dreams, enjoy every day, wake up with a smile in the morning and share as much time as possible with your loved ones.

ANY CLOSING COMMENTS?
Work hard, be focused and let your dreams come true.
