LIFESTYLE

Continue being the person that you are. We've experienced so many setbacks ,as I guess most businesses do, but if we didn't remain true to ourselves or our ethos we wouldn't be where we are.

 PRIYA, THE FASHIONISTA!
HI PRIYA, SO WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I was born and raised in UK. My mum is from Mauritius and my dad is from India. I had quite a multi cultural upbringing with a diverse exposure to the arts world, music and fashion from a very young age. My parents were very resourceful in terms of their lifestyle – inventive and innovative with their style and profession, so I guess I grasped a lot of my core interest from them. With an increased interest in the creative scene, I wanted as a child to be involved in writing, which then led me to the media field. I travelled through journalism to Public Relations and other arenas where I could develop creatively. The fields and topics as well as my clients really varied which was ideal for me as it gave me such a broad spectrum of events and ideologies.

HOW WAS YOUR CHILDHOOD?
As a child I never really wanted to be pigeonholed. I never really wanted to be grouped into a specific category, whether it be with friends, style, etc... I was always evolving in whatever form as long as I was comfortable and confident in what I was doing. I wasn't one for trends or popular culture either, a characteristic which is valued in what I do now. As a child I was always upcycling/ recycling goods or clothes and giving each item a unique look, so I guess that is an element that still remains.

WHAT SHAPED YOUR LIFE?
Important milestones for me was probably the moment I left my hometown, London for a 2 year contract to India. This is where I believed I flourished. It was the fact that I was completely out of my comfort zone, and really left to do it alone and absorb all those life experiences and adventures. It brought a new layer of existence for me, which boosted my creative confidence and led me to my second milestone, my business, imiloa. Like every business it is trial and error. But the lessons learnt are irreplaceable and valued whether good or bad. Every day is a learning curve and I'm still continuously learning. India was a journey of great significance for me. It remains one of my very humbling experiences. It changed my perspective on life as a whole. It stopped me being side-lined by materialism and focus on the important strands of life, and being the best that an individual can be, not just for oneself, but for others too. We take so many things for granted in our daily lives that others can only dream of having. India gave me perspective. I see a lot in my line of work where I'm engaging constantly with my disadvantaged artisans. I continuously witness their sheer talent and strive with zero living conditions, but they are the most faithful and giving of all people. It teaches you so much. I'm so grateful to be in a position where I can give them a platform they truly deserve

WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO MAURITIUS?
My journey to Mauritius was impulsive like every decision I make. I had a plan and I believed Mauritius was the place that was lacking such a concept. When we did the first ever pop up shop in 2012, it opened new avenues in Mauritius. I'm glad we paved the way...and then we took it to the next level and created the first concept store on the island... imiloa. Please see our complete company overview at www.imiloaboutique.com. I'm passionate about life in general. Anything that can ignite your senses and make you realize your self worth and existence makes me passionate. I'm passionate about helping others achieve their goals and that's what imiloa represents...We provide a platform dedicated to those who deserve the exposure and platform. My passion stems from leading others to success.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT MAURITIUS?
What's not to love in Mauritius. It’s so inspiring visually. Even if you are stuck in dead end traffic the skyline will provide you with solace. I like how I can switch off in Mauritius away from the hustle and bustle of city and roadie life. A trip to the beach is soothing, the views and scenery are so relaxing – it is truly paradise for me.

ANY QUOTES WHICH HAVE MARKED YOU?
One quote we have etched on our concept store wall is "you were once wild here, don't let them tame you." Isadora Duncan. It simply means don’t conform, be yourself. Continue being the person that you are. We've experienced so many setbac
