EXPATRIATES IN MAURITIUS

LIFESTYLE

DEAR EKATERINA, WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I was born in USSR in Moscow in a family with 3 kids. I have an elder sister and a twin brother. I had a simple family living middle level of life like most of the families in that time in USSR. All my childhood I spent doing different sports. For the beginning it was swimming, tennis and basketball. I played for the Russian National Youth team and participated in the European Championship with my basketball team. In our country in that time only diplomats or very rich people could travel abroad. But I was lucky and when I was 13 with my team we went to Italy and I understood how different people and places can be! When I was 20 I met my future husband and I can say since then my life completely changed. We started travelling and I realized the necessity of learning English. Meeting new friends, learning about their lives is opening your horizons, teaching you a lot. Now we are raising 2 boys and I am very happy they can speak English, Russian and a bit of French.
WHAT EVENTS WOULD YOU SAY HAVE CHANGED YOUR LIFE?
Moving to the other part of the earth is changing you, your life and your attitude towards surrounding people. For most of our friends and relatives, our decision to move to Mauritius, to somewhere they even didn’t know, seemed to be very strange. But not for us! Living in such a beautiful place, where you are enjoying the everyday view from the window of your bedroom, from your car windows or just wherever you are makes our life very happy. Of course that wasn’t so easy for everyone from our family to move here and completely change their life. Our sons left their friends in Russia, they needed some time to meet new ones. And it was very difficult for them to start studying in a new school in a foreign language. But now they are ok and even happy with the changes.
HOW DID YOU END UP IN MAURITIUS?
We spent a few holidays in Mauritius before we decided to move. We fell in love with Mauritius from the first glance and we still love it very much. We asked each other- maybe let’s try? And we tried! First we had got an agreement with a school and bought tickets and arrived. Of course there are some disadvantages to island life; like very expensive tickets, missing your relatives and friends, or early sunset that doesn’t allow you to make the most of your day. But there are much more advantages for us.
WHAT DO YOU DO FOR A LIVING?
DodoQuest is a company created and managed by 4 Russian expats. No one from our team had that kind of experience before. But we are working hard doing our best in order to grow and develop and to offer our customers better and better service. My job in DodoQuest requires many different things.
As a part of our team we have the best creative director ever Vadim Kampel with his wife Kate who have actually created all our escape rooms. Our company is unique in Mauritius. At the moment we have 3 different rooms & 3 different playgrounds. The main idea is to escape from the room with your team of 2-5 persons in less than one hour. During your game you need to look for different clues and keys, solve different puzzles, understand how you can use different objects in order to get out of the room. All our rooms are decorated in different styles and has different scenarios. DodoQuest is open every day from 10-00 to 20-00 even on Sundays and public holidays. We organize team building, corporate parties and birthday’s celebrations. We do all our best to provide our clients with the best service. For visiting DodoQuest you need to book your game. You can easily do it through our website dodoquest.com or call our hotline +230 403 85 62 or via our FB page.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT LIVING HERE?
Endless summer, awakening not because of car noise but birds singing, quiet and calm life. In summer time – incredible blossoming, in winter time- beautiful rainbows. When we lived in Moscow, I had awful mornings because in winter time I had to get up at 6:30 and it was completely dark! And cold! So I love mornings in Mauritius.
