EXPATRIATES IN MAURITIUS
» 27 Dec 2016
LIFESTYLE

HI MIKE, WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
Hello, I’m a globe trotter without any children and I’m single.
I have changed many jobs and even released two albums which made me realise that rock and
roll is dead.
I come from a family of hoteliers but my path was somewhat different.
I studied graphic design between 2001 and 2004 and I have done some graphic design work for J’adore from Dior (Champagne), Cartier, Reebok, numerous hotel chains and jewellery brands as well.
WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO MAURITIUS & WHAT DO YOU DO HERE FOR A CAREER?
In 2005, I came to Mauritius to create the first multimedia section for Eruption Studios. I stayed there 2 years before landing a job at Scoop and Strategie to set up the magazine Diplomatys (for the Diplomatic Body), Carennes Australes (Magazine for CNOI) as well as communication works for a group specialized in Eco-Tourism.
In 2009, after two years of loyal service, I decided to create Mataora in Mauritius. We started small and are expanding gradually.
In 2011, I opened my photo studio in Paris with a French friend and we propose International models to prestigious brands.
In 2013, I have opened Mataora Hong Kong and participated in the development of various projects for TV5 Monde, National Geographic, Thai got Talents and Ageas Group.
In 2014 I took a break from everything in order to find my muse and I did a road trip throughout Asia to understand how they function, view art and advertising. This was undeniably one of the richest experiences in my life.
Now we are slowly but steadily growing the company and we favorably look forward to embellishing the image of Mauritius on an International level.
I know you mentioned the visit of Asia being an interesting experience

but has anything else influenced who you are?
My greatest life lesson was taught to me by an 8 year old child. I was in a park and upset after a series of events which were difficult to deal with. The kid felt that something was wrong and told me while looking at me: “You shouldn’t be sad, life is beautiful.”
These words have resonated in my heart like thunder and helped me out of the dark place where friends and family had failed to take me out of. In life, we must remain humble and try and remain positive in every moment even if it is very hard. I’d rather be seen as solutions oriented rather than someone who beats himself over and over.
WHAT ARE THE THINGS YOU ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT?
Design and artistic creations in all forms is my passion. I love creative people. For me, they add value to the community. They bring a different vision to every day life and make everything more beautiful, more practical, more pleasant and sometimes more crazy. I

love beautiful things of good quality.
I am also a fan of new technologies and particularly of objects which connect us and have become an every day affair. Trust me, this is only the very start of it all.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT LIVING HERE?
Mauritius offers an interesting lifestyle with its culture, geographical postion and natural advantages such as beaches and mountains.
I proclaim myself to be a Mauritian of adoption. I feel more Mauritian in my soul than French. I cannot really see myself living anywhere else and I am proud to participate humbly to the development of this little island.
I am convinced since 10 years that Mauritius will be the great hub between Asia and Africa and this brings along promises of great developments for our country.
