LIFESTYLE

DEAR DAVID, WHERE IS YOUR HOME TOWN?
I was born in 1974 in South Africa. My father is Mauritian and my mother South African. We lived in Mauritius until I was at the age of 6. We then moved back to South Africa, where I went to boarding school. My parents separated when I was still at boarding school. My Dad being Mauritian, relocated back to Mauritius in the early 90’s.
ANY PARTICULAR MILESTONES YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH US
In 2006, my girlfriend of 8 years, Chantal and I were unfortunate to be involved in a violent crime. We came to Mauritius to recuperate at the beautiful place of le Morne. Chantal fell in love with the peaceful lifestyle and friendly people. We felt relaxed, welcome and felt no aggression.
When we went back to South Africa, I proposed and married Chantal. We moved back to Mauritius in 2007. If we had not moved out of South Africa, we would probably not have kids as we did not want to bring up children there. Today we are so blessed with our two kids.
HOW DID YOU MOVE YOUR CAREER TO OUR SUNNY ISLAND?
I was always involved in Food & Beverages in South Africa, where I worked for brands such as Steers, Debonairs & Scooters Pizza, all specialized in home delivery.
Over time I eventually became a consultant for the franchisor, eventually having the opportunity to buy my own stores.
My biggest achievement as a franchisee was to win the FASA (franchise association of South Africa) in 2001.
I always had the entrepreneurial spirit. Since I moved to Mauritius in 2007, I have been a Tour Operator, I did import & distribution of international surf brands in local stores and hotels and I now have Vanilla Village in Black River.
The thing I have learnt in Mauritius is to adapt quickly and change with
the trends.

here, they can enjoy easy access to all that the lively city has to offer.
Vanilla House also offers many facilities to enrich your stay. The ambiance of this beautiful property, is reflected in every guestroom. The hotel offers wonderful recreational facilities such as an outdoor pool and garden to make your stay truly unforgettable.
WHAT ARE THE THINGS YOU ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT APART FROM FOOD!
I am passionate about my family, the outdoors, cycling and golf and living a balanced lifestyle between hard work and keeping fit.
GIVE US A GLIMPSE AT AN AVERAGE DAY IN YOUR BUSY LIFE:
I usually start my day with an early rise: one hour and fifteen minutes cycle in the bush around Casela, while my wife gets kids ready for school.
I go to work, get breakfast ready for our clients at the guest house. I open the café for breakfast at 8 am and meet with the team at Vanilla Village to make sure everything runs as smoothly as possible during the day.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT LIVING HERE?
Definitely the lifestyle and the security. Also all the opportunities we have here.
WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF HAPPINESS / YOUR FAVORITE QUOTES / SAYINGS?
Here is what I was told by my very first boss, and I believe it: “Your success is defined by how great your team is.”
