FROM RUSSIA TO MAURITIUS
EKATERINA
DEAR EKATERINA, WHERE IS YOUR HOME TOWN AND WHAT IS YOUR STORY?
I was born in the northeast of Russia, in the city on the Pacific Ocean coast - Magadan. Almost all my family is made up of surgeons, but already in school I knew that I would turn out to be a pretty bad and emotional surgeon. So, I have decided to do what I do well - write and create. At 16 I went to Moscow and entered the People’s Friendship University and specialised in advertising. Until now, I have no doubt that it was the right choice.
YOU LIVE IN MAURITIUS WITH YOUR HUSBAND; SO HOW DID YOU BOTH MEET?
My husband and I met each other at work. We both worked in the creativity department of an advertising agency. In addition, we were both crazy about water sports and traveling. In fact, I think that we had no choice but to be together. Perhaps the last two aspirations led us to the island!
IS THERE ANYTHING IN PARTICULAR THAT HAS BEEN A TURNING POINT IN YOUR LIFE? MAYBE SOMEONE?
Of course sometimes we are afraid to do something. Scared to move to another city, scared to quit work and move to the other end of the world, scared to start a new business or to try a new profession but just when you step over your fear, something new and exciting happens in your life. Something that will turn your life into an interesting story.
WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO MAURITIAN SHORES?
A little more than three years ago, me and my husband came to Mauritius to ride a kite and to windsurf. And we decided that this is the most beautiful place in the world! Moreover, here were the greatest waves that we had ever seen. Then we decided that we definitely have to live here. A year later, we packed 80 kg worth of luggage and moved to Mauritius!
SO MUCH FOR THE WAVES! SO WHAT DO YOU DO HERE TO EARN A LIVING?
When we arrived on the island, the first 1.5 years of all our time occupied Dodo Quest - our first business and a big experiment. Now I have more free time and I decided to try to realize my dream which is a watercolour school for adults, named Watermelon art studio.
On the island there are very few places where adults can escape from work, children, problems, and reveal a creative talent - it’s sad.
When people leave after classes with the feeling that they have created something unexpected and stunningly beautiful - it’s very inspiring!
WHAT ARE THE THINGS YOU ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT?
I’m very often interested in different things: sports, hobbies, etc. Something passes, but something remains.. So I can confidently say that windsurfing is what I really love. I am also passionate about free diving, but Mauritius has a small depth and dangerous currents, so I cannot dive as often as I would like to. But what captures me completely at the moment is watercolour! I’m sure it will last for a long time!
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT LIVING HERE?
Over the 2.5 years, Mauritius has evolved from a small dot on the map to my house, literally. Who would have thought? Here, of course, everything is different, and even the water turns in the opposite direction! But honestly, Mauritius, a place which is not like Russia at all seems similar under certain angles. Mauritians are not so much different in character from the Russians and it’s a good news for me, because the incredible nature and summer all year around - it is great, but people with same sense of humor - it is more important.
WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF HAPPINESS / YOUR FAVOURITE QUOTES / SAYINGS?
I do not want to depress anyone, but I think we should all remember that we will not live forever. For me personally, this idea is very motivating to the fact that between something boring and unbelievable, I should choose the last! I think everyone should try to fit incredible events into their lives as much as possible!
