EXPATRIATES IN MAURITIUS

MEET MR. SCHOLTZ FOURIE & HIS THIRST FOR KNOWLEDGE!

HELLO SCHOLTZ, WHERE DO YOU HAIL FROM?

My name is Scholtz Fourie, I was born in Pretoria South Africa in 1978, the eldest of three children. I grew up in Pretoria, went to school there and also completed my degree, honours degree and my CA(SA) qualification while living there. I am married to Riana and have two daughters, Micah (5) and Veha (3). I have a Honors BCompt degree and am a qualified Chartered Accountant (SA) and also have a diploma in International Trade and Transfer Pricing. I am currently studying towards an LLB degree.

YOU MUST REALLY ENJOY LEARNING NEW THINGS. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR CHILDHOOD?

I was very privileged in that I grew up in a stable and loving home where we as children were given space and encouragement to enjoy whatever we chose to partake in, so I was a very active young boy doing karate, amateur wrestling, swimming, rugby as well as playing the piano and guitar. We were also taught that passion and dedication is needed to succeed. I realized early on that I wanted to be a chartered accountant –before I even knew exactly what one does! Living in the city, we also had the privilege which few other young boys had, to visit my grandparents who owned a farm. There away from television and the city comforts, we learned about hard work and country life. During high school I discovered rock music and taught myself to play guitar. For a few years –together with my brother and two friends – we had a music group through which we terrorized many a neighbor!

INTERESTING CHILDHOOD INDEED! YOU MENTIONED BEING MARRIED EARLIER, WHAT’S YOUR STORY IF WE MAY ASK?

I met the love of my life during our first year and varsity. We were friends and lost touch for a while. During my third year –one night at church –we ran into each other again. I knew I had to be quick to ask Riana out before my friends could, and my foresight paid off. We fell madly in love and got married four years later. In 2008 the second miracle in my life happened when Micah was born. Two years later my run of miracles continued with the birth of my youngest girl, Veha.

HOW DID YOU LAND IN MAURITIUS?

Six years ago, our group was in the final preparation of the first implementation of an upgrade of our ER system. This included our Mauritian company and I was tasked with doing the Mauritian implementation. Subsequently I was approached by our group FD with the suggestion to move to Mauritius. As I was ready for a new challenge (and a change of scenery after 29 years in Pretoria!) we decided to take up the offer.

SO WHAT IS THIS JOBTHAT GOT YOU LIVING HERE?

I work as the Commercial Director for Omnia Group International Ltd, a GBL1 company which is part of the Omnia Group –a listed South African group active in the African fertilizer, mining and chemical markets. We mainly do cross border trading of commodity chemicals and fertilizers.

WHAT ARE THE THINGS YOU ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT?

I really enjoy working for Omnia, it is a unique group with lots of challenges. I also enjoy to see people empowered and seeing them bettering themselves. I believe that there is huge untapped potential in all of us and it is incredible to see it come out. Once I believe in something I will be very passionate about it. I get very passionate about rugby –especially the Blue Bulls. Music is the other passion that I really enjoy. SinceI was very young my dad would bring home comics which he would read to me. This memory has left me very fond of super heroes and comics.  Spiderman and Superman are my favorite characters –and I have the action figures to prove it!

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT LIVING HERE?

Having grown up and lived in a city all my life, the best thing about living in Mauritius is the safety and small town feel about it. I also enjoy living near the ocean and I really enjoy Mauritian cuisine.

MAURITIUS IS INDEED A LITTLE PARADISE FOR MANY, ON THIS ENDING NOTE, WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF HAPPINESS?

I believe that one should not stop playing, it keeps us young. I have also recently heard a gem: “Character has difficulty sticking to the slippery face of charisma”. My happiness is settled in my relationship with my Heavenly Father and his Son.
