EXPATRIATES IN MAURITIUS

ROSS ALEXANDER

HI ROSS, WHERE DO YOU HAIL FROM?

My wife Lisa and I have our three daughters with us here in Mauritius.  We have been living here for just over two years having arrived from South Africa. I schooled in Johannesburg and finished my studies at Rand Afrikaans University in Financial Markets. I worked in the financial in-dustry from 1993 to 2010. We have a large family with two sons schooling at boarding school in Johannesburg.  This makes Christmas time incredibly festive and noisy. My brother, his
wife and son also live part of the year here in Mauritius.

CHRISTMAS TIME IS ALWAYS THE BEST, HOW WAS YOUR CHILDHOOD? ANY FOND MEMORIES YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH US?

I had a wonderfully happy childhood and up bringing. My brother Robbie and I grew up in a happy and loving environment. I have great memories of spending our day swimming, dogs running around the garden, lots of laughter and weekends of waterskiing.

My mother owned a fitness gym and private training center. My father was a well-known radio and TV personality. This was very exciting for us as my father was always given tickets for all the new shows and concerts that came to the country. My parents always believed and taught us that family comes first, second and third. My greatest memories are of us spending weekends at our lake house doing as much waterskiing as possible. My brother and I still compete in skiing tournaments. In October my brother placed 9th at the world champs.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP – HOW IMPRESSIVE! WHAT IN YOUR VIEW WOULD BE YOUR GREATEST MILESTONE THEN?

A great milestone was getting married at 34. I am told that this is a late age. As I say, “I had to wait for the perfect match”. Apart from the obvious with my children, my great milestones will have to be in sport. I swam in the Colorado State Cham-pionships and the Junior Olympics in Colorado USA. I also received National colours for Waterskiing.

WE ARE VERY CURIOUS TO KNOW WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO MAURITIUS AFTER SUCH A BEAUTIFUL JOURNEY.

My journey to Mauritius was fairly simple and short. We sold our previous business which led to me being constrained by a restraint of trade agreement. We decided in May 2010 to come and have a look at Mauritius and the schooling. It was there that we were informed of the school year starting in the beginning of September and not January as in South Africa. This led to a quick decision, a quick pack up and a short flight to Mauritius.

WHAT IS YOUR CAREER LIKE IN MAURITIUS?

Alexander Brothers Limited (ABL) owns West Island Resort and Spa (www.westislandresort.com) in Black river. We are extremely proud of our development. We are the first RES on the water. We are the first RES with marina facilities. We are building 61 villas and apartments. We are boasting fantastic facilities with large pool, restaurant, bar, full spa, kiddies club and gym. ABL has also acquired other properties around the island. The main focus for me is West Island. The completion will be December 2013.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT LIVING HERE?

There are many parts to living in Mauritius that I love. If I have to choose one it would be the feeling of safety. Crime does not exist here as it does in South Africa.

WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF HAPPINESS / YOUR FAVORITE QUOTES / SAYINGS?

Again, happiness comes in so many different forms. A happy day for me would be on a weekend. We wake up early and get the boat in the water. My wife is a tournament waterskiboat driver. This allows me to train correctly and safely and be with the family. After this the family will take turns to ski or go on the tube. We would normally spend most the day out on the boat eating and swimming. Finally, to finish the day off with a good game of rugby on TV.

“For yesterday is but a dream and tomorrow is only a vision. But today, well lived, makes every yesterday a dream of happiness and every tomor-row a vision of hope”

WHAT IS YOUR ENDING NOTE FOR OUR READERS?

West Island was a thought, an idea. Watching it come alive and seeing it developing day by day is very rewarding. In life I love a challenge and to focus on something that drives me.
