THE ENRICHING HOTELIER EXPERIENCEOF GERT PUCHTLER

DEAR GERT WHERE DO YOU HAILFROM?
I come from a family where we have always shared values and have been very close. My father was a dentist but we lived in the country side. I have been brought up in an area where we have always been close to nature/forest. As a child I participated in harvest in farms. I have always been sensible and known the importance of nature in our lives.
I have been to a private school offering an exclusive and personalized education. This has built up in me a sense of friendship as there were not that many students in my school and we knew each other. I have always been part of a sports team (hand ball). I am now married to a wonderful Mauritian wife, Stephanie and she is the mother of my two wonderful daughters. They enhance my life everyday.

ARE THERE ANY LIFE CHANGES WHICH HAVE IMPACTED ON WHO YOU ARE TODAY?
At my time Military service in Germany was obligatory. During our military service, we had to cope, respect and live closely without forgetting rigidity and discipline. This was one of the life changing lessons that had an impact in my life and forged my character. I remember at night, boys of 20-30 years would be crying as they were so lonely being away from their parents.
Lots of people have had an impact in my life. My first General Manager was one of them. He always kept saying “Do not look at time and money, always show that you are a hard worker and passionate about your work and you will surely succeed”.
This has been successful for me as I was already a General Manager of a hotel at the age of 29.

WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO MAURITIUS?
I have worked as a General Manager for the Maritim hotel for 10 Years. I was offered the opportunity to be the General Manager of Constance Belle Mare Plage with its two 18 holes championship golf courses. I have held this position for the past 6 years and I am grateful. Time is flying but fortunately with a constant learning curve.

INFO ABOUT YOUR JOB OR COMPANY IN MAURITIUS:
I am presently the General Manager of Constance Belle Mare Plage and have been occupying this post for the past 6 years. We are part of the hotel group “Constance Hotels and Resorts” which owns and manages seven 5 star hotels in the Indian Ocean namely:

● And of course Constance Belle Mare Plage : Mauritius
GIVE US A GLIMPSE AT AN AVERAGE DAY IN YOUR BUSY LIFE:
It is always early morning for a General Manager. Starting with a brief and follow-up in the morning. Planning the day forward. Welcoming guests, Tour Operators, Press etc (Marketing, PR, communication part of the job…)
A General Manager needs to be everywhere at the same time. You may plan your day but you will never know how your day will end. You need to understand the functioning of all fields included in the hotel sector. You need to be present for your staff but mainly for your guests.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT LIVING HERE?
The quality of life in Mauritius. I am lucky to work in a place where people go on holidays. I meet interesting people both foreigners and Mauritians almost everyday. The island is a heaven where people of different culture and religions live peacefully.
The way that I have been treated since I came in Mauritius, the way that my in laws have welcomed me, the warmth of the people is outstanding. We should not forget the sunshine, sea, I feel privileged when walking on the beach each morning.
WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF HAPPINESS / YOUR FAVOURITE QUOTES / SAYINGS?
Having my family around a wonderful meal and wine & seeing my wife and children happy.
DO YOU HAVE ANY CLOSING COMMENTS OR OTHER INFO YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE?
We have now gone through the economic crisis which had made the hotel industry suffer quite considerably and we believe that now the industry will go up. We should strive and work hard to keep the quality of this industry which is one of the biggest of the country.
We need to maintain the quality of our service and keep this spirit through the new generation
