EXPATRIATES IN MAURITIUS

THE SPEEDY MR. ROGNARD

DEAR SEBASTIEN, WHERE IS YOUR BIRTH PLACE?

I come from a little French countryside village, situated 90 kms from Geneva. Because of the location, I had to leave the family house early for studying in bigger cities like Lyon. I’ve got two different diplomas, one is BEP in accounting and the second is BTS on
commercial skills. Before looking for my first contract, I had the chance to go and live in Sydney for one year, where I passed a TOEFL degree and discovered such a nice and beautiful country. I inherited the value of respect and hard work from my parents.

WHAT WAS YOUR CHILDHOOD MADE OF?

I mainly spent my time in the forest, building tree houses or climbing. But I also spent a lot of time helping my father and neighbors to cut wood for example. Once I earned, and got my first car, the world became open for me. The first year I drove something like 100 000 kms, going everywhere to discover new places to the south of France. I enjoyed scuba diving and jetskiing with friends. I even had a girl friend in Netherlands, so I was driving
1000 km on Friday nights and back at 7 am on Mondays… that was a bit crazy.

I GUESS EVERYONE IS CRAZY AT A CERTAIN AGE! CURIOUS TO KNOW WHERE YOUR CAREER TOOK YOU!

When I came back from Australia, I was head hunted to work for the biggest supplier of plastics granulates. I worked for them for 3 years, between Paris and Strasbourg. This is where I met my wife and started a family life, with the birth of my only daughter
Zoe. At the same time, in 1995, I was looking for another job, my father proposed for me to join the family business he created in 1988 - the company produced cheese labels to distinguish and protect appellation and origin of cheeses. During 15 years we worked
hard to develop, and became the leaders in the world by increasing the turnover by 75% and margins by 150%. I can say that this was an amazing experience and a real success, but needed a lot of sacrifice to be where I’m now.

THIS IS INCREDIBLE! WHO AND WHAT IS YOUR INSPIRATION?

There is one poem and one sentence that has guided me in my life. The first one was “The letter of Kipling to his son” that my mom gave to me when I was a child, and the second is a sentence said by Jean Gabin, in a really old French movie, … “I know only one thing, is that I know nothing”….. And for sure, the person who influences me more today is my beautiful daughter, Zoe….

WHAT TOOK YOU TO MAURITIUS?

A few years after my divorce, I realized that I had to stop running, sit down and think about my priorities in life. It took me a few months, and because of a really good opportunity, we decide to sell our company. I came to Mauritius in December
2009 for 3 weeks to restore my soul, to recuperate and to think about my future, at the Shanti Maurice Hotel. I fell in love with this beautiful Island Mauritius, the people and of course my partner and soul mate Teressa… and her two siblings, Nadia and Ashley.
I went back to France to sort out and make some arrangements and  decided that this is where I want to be and live in “Mauritius” so I came back in February 2010 to settle down.

HOW DID YOU DECIDE TO OCCUPY YOUR TIME IN MAURITIUS?

After a few months, I realized that Mauritius needed something different for the society, something with a leisure activity with adrenaline in a safe environment and with a good
structure. “Here we go”, I’ve got my new challenge…. a combination with two of my favorite passions, Adrenaline and Good Food.  So I created and designed a complex with a real kart track and a gastronomic restaurant. SpeedOMax Mauritius is a leisure karting activity with 20 electric karts, eco-friendly with no noise and no fuel. We have a fully equipped modern restaurant that can seat up to 120 people – Silvertsone Restaurant.

WHAT ARE THE THINGS YOU ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT?

I am mainly passionate about speed (things that move fast), but I love cinema and human psychology.

DO YOU HAVE ANY CLOSING COMMENTS OR OTHER INFO YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE?

Life is what you make of it, I believe it is about choice. You can choose to change your life if you are willing to.
