Cholesterol is a type of fat found in the blood. The body makes cholesterol as well as gets it from food products. Cholesterol is important for synthesis of hormone called Cortisol.
Too much cholesterol can deposit in the blood vessels. This deposited cholesterol can narrow vessels and lead to a blockage, decreasing blood from getting to a certain area of the body. When this occurs in the heart vessels, it is called coronary heart disease and can cause a heart attack.
In people with chronic kidney disease (CKD), heart disease is 30 times more common.
