The liver is the largest internal organ and is involved in many complex metabolic functions essential to life. Blood leaving the digestive system (stomach, intestines) passes through the liver on its way back to the heart. Essential functions of the liver are that the liver extracts nutrients absorbed by the digestive system frmo the blood and process them for later use. The liver makes bile, which is delivered to the digestive system to help absorb fat and certain vitamins. The liver also removes medications and toxic waste-products from the blood and excretes them into bile.
