LA VANILLE RÉSERVE DES MASCAREIGNES

La Vanille is the largest Giant Aldabra tortoises’ center of reproduction in the world with more than 1000 tortoises of all ages roaming in semi liberty: an unforgettable experience among those colonies of tortoises. La Vanille plays a vital role in the
preservation of the biodiversity of the island, and has embarked on several projects namely: Two conservation projects in the South of Mauritius for the removal of alien and invasive plants in the tropical forest where ebony grows normally, and a project
for the re-introduction of tortoises to Rodrigues island. We owe to the founders of La

Vanille the initiative of re-creating a sanctuary for the Aldabra and Radiata tortoises on Rodrigues Island, at Francois Leguat Reserve. This work has allowed a whole
ecosystem to recover gradually.

Thanks to the initiative taken by the founders and their ecological endeavour, visitors to the Francois Leguat reserve, named after the French explorer and naturalist who
lived on the island during the 15th century, now have the chance of observing some of the rehabilitated biodiversity of the island.

You can also discover in complete security more than 1500 Nile crocodiles at La Vanille: a picture with a 6 months to 1 year old baby crocodile is a must!

The Insectarium is one of the largest collections of butterflies and insects in the world with more than 23,000 species. It took Mr Jacques Siedlecki 33 years of patient work to put together this amazing collection, and he will greet you himself, and tell
you all about his passion for insects. The Restaurant “The Hungry Crocodile” built among the tree-tops will offer you a choice of Mauritian and other dishes, offers its speciality which is crocodile meat cooked in various ways including the Mauritian
and European way. Snacks and various drinks are also available. The souvenir shop cannot be missed. There, you will find fine goods made of crocodile skins as well as
handcrafted products: it is a souvenir that will prove precious and unforgettable for everyone.

WHAT’S NEW AT LA VANILLE?

A Fossils Museum: This exhibit and associated artwork shows their diversity; biology and how they are collected and processed in Madagascar. Ammonites are one of the most popular and easily recognized of all fossils.  In addition, the museum includes
a modern section showing the story of marine mammals in Mauritius. This features a fascinating display of whale skeletons as well as seals, dugongs and whale tooth scrimshaw.

Come and discover our new attraction The Park is open everyday from 9h30 to 17h00 and we feed the Crocodiles every Wednesday and Saturday at 11h30.

The entire team of “La Vanille Réserve des Mascareignes” will be happy to welcome you to this “Magical Place” where nature and humans can meet in a truly Mauritian way.
