SINGER SCREWS NATIONAL ANTHEM 'STAR-SPANGLED BANNER'

Canadian jazz singer Alexis Normand's version of "Star-Spangled Banner" captured the attention of hundreds who attended an international ice hockey tournament on Saturday, May 18. Players and the crowd at the Memorial Cup hockey match in Saskatoon, Canada, chuckled when Normand suddenly changed some lyrics of the national anthem.

"O say can you see by the dawn's early light," she sang perfectly. She began to ruin the song when changing the second line's "twilight's last gleaming" into "twilight's first gleaming." "Those broad stripes and bright stars..." she continued and suddenly paused for a few seconds before adding, "at the dawn's early light" instead of "through the perilous fight."

In addition to randomly mixing some phrases of the song, Normand added some mumbles and hums to fill the parts she completely couldn't sing. While some spectators, including the players, seemed amused, some others came to her rescue and finished the song together. She ended her performance after 90 seconds.

Normand reportedly was only prepared to sing the national anthem of her country, "O Canada". She didn't expect that she would sing the U.S. anthem as well. For her mistake, she immediately took to Twitter to apologize. She wrote, "I'm embarrassed and deeply sorry. I wish I'd had more time to learn the American anthem. Thanks so much for the crowd's help!"
