FLOOD WARNING APP FOR IPHONE USERS

The Environment Agency has released an iPhone app that will issue emergency flood warnings to users on the move.

The free software, "Flood Alert", uses the iPhone's location to provide instant flood warnings for the local area. Users are also be able to monitor the flooding threat at up to two other chosen locations in England and Wales, such as the home town of an elderly relative.

Craig Woolhouse, of the Environment Agency, said: "One in six properties in England and Wales is at flood risk.

"This new app is part of our growing use of technology to help better prepare communities and businesses for the devastating impacts of floods."

The warnings issued to Flood Alert users are derived from the Environment Agency's network of weather and water level sensors. Android and BlackBerry versions will be released in the next few months, the Environment agency said.

The app's release comes the same week as a £1.8m nationwide exercise designed to test authorities' preparedness for flooding. Government departments, emergency services and utility companies participated in Exercise Watermark, which simulated flash flooding, a bursting reservoir and a North Sea tidal surge.

The exercise was set up after widespread criticism of authorities' readiness for and response to floods in 2007, which caused billions of pounds of damage to swathes of Yorkshire, the Midlands and the South West.
