IPAD 2 FORCES SAMSUNG INTO GALAXY TAB RETHINK

Samsung will have to rethink the price of its new Galaxy Tab to compete with Apple’s iPad, according to the company’s vice president of mobile.

A 10-inch version of Samsung’s Galaxy Tab is due for release soon. The company released a 7-inch model last year, which received good reviews but did not sell as well as the company hoped.

Following the launch of the iPad 2, earlier this week, Lee Don-joo, Samsung’s executive vice president of mobile, said: “The 10-inch was to be priced higher than the 7-inch but we will have to think it over.”

Announcing the iPad 2, Steve Jobs, Apple’s chief executive, said the iPad launched at an “unbelievable” price. He added: “People weren’t sure that it was an unbelievable price. Well, ask our competitors now.”

The iPad 2 is thinner, lighter and faster than its predecessor and has cameras on the front and back. Samsung’s new Galaxy Tab, unveiled last month at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, has a larger screen than the iPad 2 and is about the same weight. It is not quite as thin, however, as Lee acknowledged.

Lee told the Yonhap News Agency: “We will have to improve the parts that are inadequate. Apple made it very thin."
