The most popular web activity in the UK is searching for discounts and deals on products, according to a ‘technology census’.
The report, compiled by electronics shop Comet to coincide with National Census Day, found that 84 per cent of people use the internet at home to search for deals. The second most popular web activity was online banking, and the third was checking news.
Comet polled 2,600 people across the UK to discover changing habits in the usage of the internet across different households.
Searching for discounts was more popular than social networking, which came seventh in the top 10 list of web activities.
Separately 81 per cent of respondents said that email was their favourite way to communicate. And over a third of those polled no longer watch TV at usually times, preferring to catch up on programmes using video-on-demand services such as the BBC iPlayer.
Seventy per cent said that that they would consider it a “disaster” if the internet stopped working in their homes.
