kite/wind Spots in the north

Cap Malheureux-The public beach at is situated right by the Chapel. This is a touristic landmark, with its view on the northern islands, but does not have a very good entry point for kiters. However you will find, 100 meters to the left when looking out to sea, after the rocky point, a perfect long white sand beach (foto) with good wind for launching on east and northeasterly days.

Another good access used by the locals is situated on a “private” beach. For this launch you will have to speak to the guys from Sindbad kite school situated right on this spot.

Riding conditions here are usually best in southeast, east and northeasterly conditions, although very rare northwesterly winds have been good as well.

Be sure to ask the locals about the best areas and “test” your way out carefully, as there are many coral reefs that surround the coast here.

Two or three different wave spots will delight those that are that way inclined, but beware of the tidal levels, most reefs are not passable at low or medium tides.

ANSE LA RAIE-Just upwind of , is a very big lagoon with almost two kilometers of “one way riding”.

This lagoon can be accessed by two places: namely the bay of “Anse la Raie” public beach (foto), which you cannot oversee when driving along the coast, or by the beach in front of the sports youth centre of the ministry of sports, also by a public beach. This lagoon has a few shallow areas that can be seen from the surface, because of the change of colour of the water, and you should be able to work it out after a few “test” runs.

GRAND GAUBE-A classic fishing village, with two major hotels, has rideable areas, but with relatively difficult access for kiters, and a bit easier for windsurfers. The shallow water of this lagoon makes low tide riding a scary and sometimes expensive experience (fins). This lagoon has many traps in the form of coral heads and patches, however if you cruise upwind you will find very clear waters and good sailing zones within the bay of “Ilot Bernache”.

ROCHES NOIRES-A classic fishing village, with two major hotels, has rideable areas, but with relatively difficult access for kiters, and a bit easier for windsurfers. The shallow water of this lagoon makes low tide riding a scary and sometimes expensive experience (fins). This lagoon has many traps in the form of coral heads and patches, however if you cruise upwind you will find very clear waters and good sailing zones within the bay of “Ilot Bernache”.

Situated on the northeastern coast of the island, has side onshore wind conditions most of the time. It is a very big lagoon (several km) with no traffic worth mentioning.

The access to the water is not as easy as it should be, with all the valid beaches being in private ownership, the coastline is blocked by private residences.

The public beaches in Roches Noires are not very safe for entering the water with a kite, due to the presence of submerged rocks and concrete jetties used for disembarking the daily catches.
