Surf Spots in the West

TAMARIN BAY-The west coast is not the windy side, so does not offer much to sailors. However the anticyclones moving east, further south of Mauritius, do, at times, send up good surfing swell along this coast. These spots are pretty well known globally, so we will only expound on the main one, namely “Tamarin Bay”. This bay offers three rides :

    * In the bay for the novices with a weaker sand pebbled bottom.
    * on the northern side of the bay is the wave called “black rock”, a nice right hander, that breaks better at low tide
    * and on the main reef the wave known as “Dalle”, not for the lighthearted, is for many the best left hander in the galaxy.

Beware of this wave at low tide, the coral heads tend to suddenly pop out of the water in front of the wave, specially on the inside. The bay has many other attractions, such as the traditional fishing activities, the cheap guest houses catering for surfers, and last but not least the Tamarin Hotel with its attached surf shop, where you will find big names for surf, windsurf and kiting gear at unbeatable prices. Other spots up the coast have been known to be ridden by surfers, but these are far and few in between, and hooking up with the locals who ride them is the best way to discover these. The west coast however does have its share of beautiful white beaches and several hotels all the way along the coast to the north. Some places like “Black river”, “Flic en Flac” or, “Mont Choisy” public beach can work good for kiting or windsurfing, but will need the rare strong northeasterly or after cyclone west winds to make them worthwhile.
