Since the 18th Century, Sugar Industry was the main, if not the only, activity. With the independance, in 1968, new developments have taken place such as Export Manufacturing Industry (Textile and non Textile), employing today 68,000 people with a turnover of 42 Billions Rupees,Tourism Industry (today 30,000 direct Employment for a Turnover of 36 Billions Rupees), more recently Finances and offshore Centers and the new comer ICT Sector. Mauritius, with a democratic political structure, is looking for more services oriented towards professional activities and is trying to improve its training at a quite high level of education. Even if its unemployment rate could be around 6%, foreign labour force represents in the different fields of the economy about 4% of the total employment. For a business man, whether a foreigner or a local, the fiscal environment is favourable - 15% on corporate tax, no tax on dividends paid and Import customs duty are at a reasonable rate. For Individuals, the income tax is at only one level of 15%. The private sector associations, representing different fields of activities, are well structured and are in regular and good consultation with the Government and the Civil Servants for the benefit of our country which is more and more internationally oriented.
François de Grivel,
CBE President of MEXA (Export Sector)
President of ACT (ICT Sector)
