CLIMATE:
The island is blessed with an excellent tropical climate. Summer is from November to May, during this period the temperature varies between 22°C and 35°C.Winter is from May to November with a temperature variance between 17°C and 26°C. The coastal areas are usually warmer, with the sea temperature varying between 22°C and 26°C. The central plateau regions are cooler during these periods. Cyclones may affect the country during November-April.

TIME DIFFERENCE:
Mauritius is 4 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and 3 hours ahead compared to the European Continent.

DRESS CODE:
Beach wear and casual clothes is the key to enjoying the island.When attending a formal event, it is always best to check with the host. During winter months it is advised to carry warm clothing as the temperature reduces, especially during the evening. When visiting religious places, one must wear appropriate clothing giving due to the premises.

TIPPING:
Tipping is not compulsory and is at the discretion of the visitor.

DRIVING:
Mauritians drive on the left-hand side of the road and give way to the right.Visitors with a driving license are allowed to drive during their stay. It is always best to check with the Car Rental Company and local authorities beforehand.

MEDICAL SERVICES:
Both Private and free public Medical services are available on the Island. Private clinics provide medical services for a fee.

ELECTRICITY:
Power supply is 220 volts.

CURRENCY:
The local currency is the Mauritian Rupee (Rs.) and further divided into 100 cents (cs.). All the banks, major hotels and bureau de change provide facilities to exchange traveler's cheques and foreign currencies. The exchange rate varies from day to day. Here is an indicative value of the common currencies as at October 2007. 1 EURO = Rs. 41.50
1 USD = Rs. 29.50
1 POUND = Rs. 60.50
All major Credit Cards are usually accepted by banks and most hotels, restaurants and shops.

BANKING HOURS:
Monday to Thursday: 9.15 am -3.15 pm, Friday: 9.15 am -3.30 pm. (Check Services for listings)

BARGAINING:
Most stores and Brand named outlets have fixed prices. There are some shops who may provide a discount. Market places are a great place to haggle if you want to.
