The Domaine de Labourdonnais, a privately owned Estate, was founded in 1774 and recently opened to the public.
This magnificent authentic estate of 540 hectares is surrounded by spectacular green sugar cane fields and is ideally located in the north of the island. Being one of those large agricultural lands owned by sugar planters through many generations and bearing the name of one of the greatest and famous French governors who endeavoured to promote the development of Mauritian agriculture in the 18th century, the property was from the very start a concession, then became a productive sugar estate in the 19th century.
Château de Labourdonnais, surrounded by its beautiful orchards, was built between 1856 and 1859 by Christian Wiehe where himself and his descendant lived until recently.
This grand mansion was restored between 2006 & 2010 and converted into a museum that invites you to discover the nineteenth century Mauritian lifestyle as well as its history.
Fifty years ago, the Estate embarked in a diversification process starting by its agricultural activity to produce a variety of tropical fruits, vegetables and also has a nursery offering a large variety of fruit trees and decorative plants.
Today, the Estate has further diversified its activities offering products and services such as; fruit transformed products, leisure and events activities, real estate services, distillation of rum and much more. The real estate department offers office spaces for rent, ranging from 20m2 to 400m2 in a natural and authentic environment.
The orchards date back from 1975 and now offer up to fifteen different varieties of tropical fruits such as mangoes, guavas, papayas etc. An area of 45 hectares is dedicated to the orchards that produces up to 500 tons of fruit per year. The Vanilla plantation occupies an area of 5 hectares, under shade houses and was established in 2000 and presently we produce approximately 450 kilos of dried pods annually that are mainly sold on the Estate and exported.
In 1995, the Domaine de Labourdonnais embarked in a new adventure and started processing fruits from its orchards. This “savoir faire” acquired years ago is still applied in a modern factory built in 2007. Our cooking methods retains all the goodness of the fruits without altering its natural colour and taste.
Today, Les Vergers de Labourdonnais is established as a nationwide renowned brand. With more than 50 dedicated employees involved in this activity we supply most of the hotels in Mauritius. We aspire to provide an endless authentic fruitful experience.
On the Leisure and Events side, Chateau de Labourdonnais offers an exceptional tour throughout its gardens, orchards and the mansion in itself where the visitors can experience Mauritian 19th Century lifestyle and discover historical documents as well as a new and modern art gallery.
The tour ends at the Tasting bar and the souvenir shop where the products of Les Vergers de Labourdonnais can be tasted and bought as well as many locally and internationally crafted items.
Inspired by traditional family recipes and drawing upon a rich variety of local produce, the on-site restaurant, La Table du Château offers a menu that reflects a cuisine brimming with local flavours.
In addition to visiting the house and grounds, the Château offers groups a range of fun and original activities (booking only) through which to discover the estate in a different light and delve into day-to-day life on a sugar plantation.
The new activity is the Labourdonnais Express experience where you can climb aboard the train for a fresh and entertaining way to discover the Domaine. The Express offers a 45-minute guided tour of the estate’s gardens, orchards and vanilla greenhouse
