If you follow our Escape articles, you’ll know of the soft spot we hold for the bay of Balaclava which overlooks Port Louis harbour and offers promises of great romantic views for dinner and walks along the beach. Our destination this time is InterContinental Mauritius Resort Balaclava Fort. Nestled in the Bay of Balaclava, the hotel provides the perfect balance of luxury and natural beauty. After our visit we found that the hotel is one of the best on the island for a family getaway, wedding, conference or couple retreat.

40 family rooms with connecting rooms are available to guests and we strongly recommend the all inclusive packages which are offered. The presidential suite is one of the most impressive we were made to visit and it consists of a duplex spread over a surface area of 300 square metres and has its own Jacuzzi and 3 private balconies which will make you feel cut off from the rest of the hotel as you can lose yourself to the surrounding magnificent views of the mountain range. InterContinental is known to host big fat weddings and the hotel can be rented out for this purpose and its conference room contains state-of-the-art facilities for corporate events. The executive suite we stayed in was spacious and decorated very well with a balcony facing the beach.
My husband has just turned into a vegetarian so it is interesting to see how much a hotel caters for variety especially for breakfast and dinner at the main restaurant. The main restaurant at InterContinental is called Senso and we were welcomed by an around the world buffet concept for both breakfast and dinner. The concept proudly boasts gastronomy from the 6 continents around the world. The variety of food available is one of the best we’ve experienced in 5 years of reviewing hotels. Live cooking adds ambience to candle lit dinners along with the live band made up of local artists. If you would like to taste typically Mauritian food, proceed to Segala for local delicacies and for high quality Indian food, we strongly recommend the restaurant Veda. A special mention has got to be made for the bar set in the main swimming pool, it is called the Sugarcane Bar. Not only will you feel pampered while chilling in the pool but it is a very unique touch as most hotels do not allow drinks in the pool.
Diving at Baie aux Tortues and snorkelling and kayaking along the bay itself will help you escape into the natural setting which has earned our island the title of Paradise. You can let go of your worries whilst strolling along the beach or indulging in one of many sea activities provided by the hotel. Arrangements can be made for shopping in the city and exploring other parts of the island as well. Overall, we would strongly recommend the hotel and would gladly stay there again. The variety of food and quality of the rooms are one of the best we’ve experienced on the island. The way the hotel is set and managed is innovative so even if we have stayed in the hotel before, our most recent visit was a refreshing one with additional amenities to make our stay unique. -By Shikha
