Flic en Flac derived its name from an Old Dutch phrase "Fried Landt Flaak" (meaning ‘Free and Flat Land’). You can only imagine how magical the place must have looked to the explorers arriving in the 18th century.

The sunny town is found in the district of Black River on the western coast of the island of Mauritius. It covers a long part of the west coast and provides perfect possibilities for endless beach walks.

What makes the beach of Flic en Flac unique and special is the fact that it’s a natural beach where you can find sea coral, urchins and shells that are washed ashore.

Because Flic en Flac is located in the West, you can enjoy breath taking sunsets in the evening while sitting in the sand or enjoying a nice meal in one of the restaurants along the boardwalk.

Another advantage is that Flic en Flac is located a long drive away from the main coastal road, so you don’t have the constant stream of fast-flowing traffic that plagues other towns on the west coast.

Flic en Flac is a very good start point for discovering the west and southwestern region of Mauritius. You can go on some very special full and half day land excursions as well as adventure tours, shopping trips and catamaran cruises on the west coast.

The Casela Nature & Leisure Park, located near Flic en Flac, is a park of 14 hectares that offers a home to 1500 birds, lions, zebras, giant tortoises, monkeys, a tiger, and many other animals.

You can enjoy the park by going on a Safari by Quad, Buggy or Segway or by going on an adventurous hiking tour with several zip lines(including the longest zip line in the Indian Ocean) or you can go for a walk with real lions!

Flic en Flac is home to a variety of restaurants, that reflect the exciting diversity of the Mauritian culture. Whether you like freshly caught seafood, a real sizzling piece of steak or Italian pastas: you can enjoy it all in Flic en Flac. Also, you should try the local snacks that are sold on the beaches.

Nightlife in Flic-en-Flac (together with Grand Bay) is more lively and fun than any other parts of Mauritius. Since it is located close to the major residential cities of Mauritius, it is the place to be part of a real mix of Mauritians. Many clubs, bars, nightclubs and a casino are found along the coastal road opposite the public beach and are walking distance from each other.

There are numerous shops and boutiques to explore in Flic en Flac, selling local crafts, clothing and souvenirs. Also, the West coast of Mauritius is welcoming its first shopping mall, scheduled to open its doors at the end of October 2011. With the best shops, top class facilities and a nice food court, Cascavelle Shopping Mall will offer high quality entertainment and service. This complex is set to become the single stop for all the needs of shoppers in the western part of the island. The site of the shopping mall is located at one of the busiest junctions in the western part of the island, connecting Black River, Tamarin and Flic en Flac to the nearby conurbations and to the capital city of Port Louis. The complex will be easily accessible both from the Black River (A3) and the Flic en Flac roads.
